Across its 110 acres, you have open water, forest, landscaped gardens, the restored farmhouse, the Event Barn, and more modern accommodation spaces, so a wedding gallery would not have to rely on the same countryside backdrop all day.

I also would not try to use every location simply because it is available. From a photography perspective, I’d be looking at which two or three areas make the most sense for the couple, the season, the timeline, and what is happening elsewhere on the property that day.

The Private Lake and Shoreline

The 60-acre private lake is probably the most obvious place I would look at for couple portraits. It is large enough that the water can become the main landscape behind the couple rather than just appearing as a small feature in the background. Parts of the lake also have a sandy shoreline, with forest surrounding the water.

That gives us a few different ways to photograph the same area. Wider portraits could pull back enough to show the shoreline, water, and treeline together, while tighter photographs could use the water as a much simpler background behind the couple.

I would also want to see exactly where the shoreline faces and how accessible each section is before deciding when it fits best into a wedding timeline. On a property this large, the prettiest-looking location is not automatically the right choice if reaching it means taking too much time away from cocktail hour or the reception.

Visually, it should also feel quite different from the large lake. The lake is about scale and open landscape, while the garden area gives us smaller details and more layers immediately around the couple.

The Restored 1854 Farmhouse

The restored 1854 farmhouse is one of the most distinctive built features on the property. It has five bedrooms along with a kitchen, dining room, den, and other living spaces, and it can also be used by the wedding party or family staying on-site.

From a photography perspective, I would be looking at the farmhouse for more than just couple portraits. It has the potential to give the beginning of the gallery a completely different visual language from the barn, lake, and woods later in the day.

For getting-ready photographs, the architecture and interiors could provide context around details like the dress, invitations, jewellery, and quieter moments with family or the wedding party. 

Outside, the historic stone exterior also gives us something more architectural to work with instead of making every portrait about trees and water.

Around the Event Barn and Pergola

Not every portrait needs to involve walking down to the lake.

The Event Barn, Italian-style pergola, pond, and cascading gardens are grouped within the main event area, which makes this part of the property especially practical when the schedule is tight. The pergola sits kitty-corner from the Event Barn, while the pond and gardens are directly outside the barn area.

From a photography perspective, I’d be looking here for photographs that feel more connected to the wedding itself. The barn and pergola introduce architectural lines and structure, while the nearby landscaping keeps the countryside setting visible.

This would also be one of the first areas I would consider for quick portraits during the reception. If there is only a small break between dinner and speeches, staying around the barn makes much more sense than taking the couple on a long walk through the property.

The Geodesic Domes and Lakeside Accommodation

Thee Farm currently has six 400-square-foot geodesic glamping domes, each with a king-sized bed, full bathroom, private stone piazza, dining area, fire table, and views toward the lake.

Visually, they are very different from everything else on the property. The rounded, modern domes against a heavily wooded and lakeside setting could give couples something much less traditional than the farmhouse or barn.

If wedding access permits, I would be interested in using this area in two ways. The first is for getting-ready photographs if the couple or wedding party is staying in one of the domes. The second is for a small number of portraits that intentionally include the dome architecture rather than trying to hide it.

I would not make the domes the centre of the whole gallery, but they could be a fun way to show another part of what makes Thee Farm different from a standard barn venue.

The lake and other open areas are more exposed to overhead sun, while the forests, trails, gardens, and farmhouse surroundings offer more tree coverage. During brighter afternoon hours, I would be looking at those more sheltered areas first rather than automatically using the lake just because it is one of the most dramatic locations.

Ceremony Orientation

For an outdoor ceremony, I would want to know exactly which direction the couple and guests are facing. At both the Lake and Pond, the ceremony orientation will affect where the sun falls on the couple, wedding party, and guests, so the ceremony time and seating direction should be considered together.

Around the Lake

The 60-acre lake is one of the strongest portrait locations on the property, but water can reflect a lot of light when the sun is higher. Depending on the conditions, I may need to adjust where the couple stands or the angle I photograph from.

Once the reception moves indoors, I would look at how much natural light reaches the Event Barn, where the windows and dance floor are positioned, and what ambient lighting is used once daylight fades.

For dinner, speeches, and dancing, I would want to keep some of the natural atmosphere of the barn rather than making the reception look artificially bright. The venue’s integrated AV and indoor event setup will also influence how the space looks once it is fully set for a wedding.

One of the biggest advantages of Thee Farm is that so much of the wedding can happen on the same property. You can get ready on-site, hold the ceremony outdoors, move into cocktail hour, and continue into the Event Barn for dinner and dancing without building travel time between each part of the day.

From a photography perspective, I would build the timeline around the actual ceremony time and light conditions rather than following a generic wedding-day template. If the ceremony happens during a brighter part of the afternoon, for example, we may use more sheltered areas for the first round of portraits and save the lake or shoreline for later.

After the ceremony, I would usually leave enough time for immediate family photos and wedding-party portraits before moving into couple portraits. If cocktail hour is already underway and time is limited, the pond, gardens, farmhouse, and areas around the Event Barn make the most sense because they keep us close to the reception.

With a longer portrait window, we can make better use of the lake, shoreline, tree-lined driveway, and forested areas without rushing across such a large property.

Getting ready on-site can simplify the beginning of the day too. If the couple or wedding party is using the farmhouse or domes, those spaces can naturally become part of the photographs rather than requiring another stop on the timeline.

I would also try to protect a short portrait window closer to sunset, particularly if the lake is important to the couple. It does not need to be another full portrait session. Even ten or fifteen minutes later in the day can give us a different setting and softer conditions than we had immediately after the ceremony.

The goal would be to use Thee Farm’s variety without turning portrait time into a tour of all 110 acres. A few well-chosen locations that fit the light, timeline, and couple will usually give the gallery more variety than trying to photograph everywhere.

What Happens If It Rains at Thee Farm?

Rain is less of a problem at Thee Farm than it might be at a venue that depends entirely on an uncovered outdoor ceremony.

The main weather backup is the 2,500-square-foot Italian-style pergola beside the Event Barn. It has a retractable roof and can remain open in good weather or be converted into a covered space when it rains. The venue specifically allows wedding ceremonies in the pergola, so couples can move a Lake or Pond ceremony under cover without giving up the outdoor feel completely.

I don’t have any official confirmation that the Event Barn can be used as the standard indoor ceremony backup, so that is something couples should confirm directly with the venue.

From a photography perspective, I would also leave some flexibility in the timeline on a rainy day. The covered pergola gives us somewhere protected for photographs, and the Event Barn provides another indoor setting if access and the reception setup allow it.

I would not automatically cancel outdoor portraits either. If the rain stops for ten or fifteen minutes, we can use that short window for photographs around the pond, gardens, lake, or farmhouse rather than trying to force a full portrait session outside.

Because the downloadable package is currently labelled 2025, I would ask Thee Farm for an updated quote for your specific wedding date.

How many guests can Thee Farm Kemptville accommodate?

The Event Barn can accommodate approximately 150 guests for a seated dinner or up to 200 for a standing reception. Ceremony capacity can vary depending on the location and seating layout, so couples planning a larger ceremony should confirm the maximum for their preferred setup directly with the venue.
