What’s Strathmere Lodge Like?

The Lodge is one of the three main wedding venues located across the 200-acre Strathmere Weddings Estate in North Gower. It is a 160-year-old barn with a warm, country-styled atmosphere that feels spacious enough for a larger celebration without losing its cozy character.

Inside, the reception space features smooth wood floors, cathedral ceilings, original 160-year-old beams, and six wrought-iron and crystal orb chandeliers. One of the most striking features is the 24-foot limestone fireplace, which creates a beautiful backdrop for speeches, dinner, and reception photographs.

Strathmere Lodge can accommodate up to 180 guests for a seated dinner and up to 225 guests for a reception, making it a strong choice for couples planning a larger wedding with plenty of room for dining, dancing, and celebrating.

A Real Fall Wedding at Strathmere Lodge: Carley and Scott

Strathmere Lodge is a great fit for fall weddings because its warm, relaxed feel works so well with deeper autumn colours. 

Carley and Scott’s relaxed celebration showed how couples can personalize the venue without competing with its existing character. Their colour palette combined navy with autumn-inspired details, with the bridesmaids wearing dark navy dresses and the groomsmen in coordinating suits.

Carley made the bouquets herself, which added a personal touch to the day. Their celebration is a beautiful example of how Strathmere Lodge can support a polished fall wedding while still leaving room for meaningful, individual choices.

Outdoor Ceremony at Strathmere Lodge

The outdoor ceremony space at Strathmere Lodge overlooks the surrounding hills, giving couples an open countryside setting that still feels intimate. The scenery adds depth and atmosphere without distracting from the ceremony itself.

Carley and Scott chose an unplugged ceremony, asking guests to put their phones away and stay fully present while they exchanged vows. This created a more personal atmosphere and allowed their photographs to capture genuine reactions without raised screens in the background.

They also included a surprise pinky swear during their vows. The playful moment reflected their relationship and added a personal touch to the ceremony.

The Reception Experience at Strathmere Lodge

The Lodge has a large indoor reception room that feels warm and relaxed without losing the energy of a full evening celebration. It works well for dinner and speeches earlier in the night, then shifts easily into dancing and a livelier atmosphere later on.

Carley and Scott included a ceremonial cake cutting followed by cupcakes for their guests, keeping the traditional moment while making dessert simple and easy to serve.

As the evening continued, the photography became more documentary and less directed. Candid images captured guests talking, laughing, dancing, and reacting during the speeches and special moments.

These photographs preserve the smaller interactions couples may miss during the reception, alongside the first dance, parent dances, cake cutting, and open dancing.

Wedding Photography at Strathmere Lodge

Strathmere Lodge keeps every part of the wedding day connected, allowing the celebration to flow naturally from the ceremony through to the reception.

Depending on the season, timeline, and available light, portraits can take place around the Lodge exterior, open grounds, pathways, mature trees, ceremony area, and nearby countryside spaces.

The rustic architecture also works beautifully as a backdrop. The combination of wood, stone, greenery, and open sky gives couples several distinct looks without taking them far away from their guests.

A photography timeline can include family photographs, wedding-party portraits, couple photographs, and a short sunset session later in the day.

Sunset portraits were particularly important to them, so we reserved time later in the day to step outside again once the light had softened.

I often recommend treating sunset portraits as a second, shorter portrait session rather than taking every couple photograph immediately after the ceremony. The light usually softens later in the evening, and couples often feel more relaxed once the formal parts of the day are complete.

Even ten or fifteen quiet minutes outside can create a completely different set of images.

Lighting Considerations at The Lodge

Strathmere Lodge offers two distinct lighting environments: bright outdoor spaces and a warmer, moodier reception room. 

Earlier in the day, the outdoor areas provide natural light for family, wedding-party, and couple portraits. The photographer can adjust the location and angle depending on the strength and direction of the sunlight.

Inside, the reception room’s warm lighting creates an intimate atmosphere for speeches, first dances, parent dances, and candid moments later in the evening. Rather than making the space appear overly bright, I photograph it in a way that preserves its natural mood and character.

A Relaxed Wedding-Day Timeline

For a wedding at Strathmere Lodge, I generally recommend allowing enough time for:

• Immediate family photographs after the ceremony
• Wedding-party portraits
• An initial couple portrait session
• Time to enjoy part of the cocktail hour
• A short second portrait session near sunset

Creating a clear family photo list before the wedding also helps these portraits move efficiently without making anyone feel rushed.

Couples planning a larger celebration should leave small buffers between the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. These extra minutes give guests time to settle in and help the entire day feel more comfortable.

Weather Backup Considerations

Outdoor ceremonies and portraits are a major part of the Strathmere experience, but every couple should still have a clear weather plan.

When planning your wedding, ask the Strathmere team which backup ceremony option applies to The Lodge, how early a weather decision needs to be made, and whether the setup changes based on your guest count.

For photography, rain does not mean all outdoor portraits have to be cancelled. Covered areas, doorways, the Lodge exterior, and short breaks in the weather may still give us opportunities to work outside.

Clear umbrellas can also be useful when the rain is light.

Guest Experience at Strathmere Lodge

The countryside setting helps a wedding at The Lodge feel removed from the city without requiring guests to travel several hours from Ottawa.

Since the entire celebration can happen on-site, guests do not need to navigate between a separate ceremony venue, portrait location, and reception hall.

The indoor and outdoor areas also give guests room to move around throughout the evening. Depending on the season and wedding setup, they may be able to spend time near the outdoor fire, enjoy the grounds, or move between the Lodge and the outdoor celebration spaces.

Strathmere also has overnight accommodations available on the estate. Availability and the number of rooms included can depend on the wedding package, so couples should confirm the current accommodation options directly with the venue.

For guests staying elsewhere, it is helpful to provide transportation guidance or arrange a shuttle, particularly because the venue is located in the countryside outside central Ottawa.
