The wedding morning is one of the most memorable parts of the day. It’s filled with emotion, excitement, laughter, and often a few quiet, meaningful moments. As an Ottawa wedding photographer, it’s one of my favourite parts to capture because it holds so much anticipation and beauty before the official events begin.
Whether you’re in the early planning stages or your wedding is just around the corner, this guide will help you prepare for a relaxed, photo-friendly start to your day.

Your wedding is not just about the ceremony and reception. The getting-ready portion is where so many heartfelt and candid moments unfold. From handwritten letters to champagne toasts and the final touch on your outfit, this part of the day deserves to be documented with just as much care.
With a little preparation, your photographer can capture these details in a way that feels natural, calm, and reflective of your unique story.

These are the details I typically photograph first when I arrive. Having everything grouped together in one spot makes the process smooth and stress-free.
Wedding Morning Photo Checklist:
Wedding outfit(s)
All rings (engagement ring and both wedding bands)
Shoes and accessories
Jewellery
Perfume or personal scent
Vow books or letters to each other
Invitation suite (two or three copies, if possible)
Ring box or dish
Family heirlooms or other sentimental items
Extra florals or loose blooms (ask your florist to include a few)
Preparing these items ahead of time allows for intentional, beautiful flat lay photos that capture the essence of your day.

No matter where you are getting ready, a few simple adjustments can help create a clean and inviting environment for your photos.
Choose a room with natural light, ideally near a window
Keep the space tidy by putting away bags, tags, and packaging
Steam your outfit the night before and remove all labels or plastic coverings
Assign a friend or member of your wedding party as a detail contact to help your photographer locate everything quickly
The goal is to create a calm space where you can be present and relaxed, while also allowing your photographer to work creatively without interruption.

Some of the most emotional and memorable photos happen in the hours before the ceremony. These are a few moments I love to capture:
Sharing a toast with your closest people
A first look with family or wedding party members
Reading letters or exchanging gifts
Getting zipped, buttoned, or tied into your outfit
Hair and makeup finishing touches
These small details often become some of the most cherished images from the day.

Your wedding morning sets the tone for the entire day. Preparing these details ahead of time not only helps things run smoothly but also allows space for meaningful moments to unfold naturally.
Whether you have already booked your photographer or are still planning, I hope this guide helps you feel more confident and excited about the start of your wedding day.
If you are planning a wedding in Ottawa or the surrounding area and are looking for someone to document the day with care, colour, and joy, I would love to hear from you.
