A Romantic NAC Engagement Session in Ottawa with Downtown Views

When Ottawa feels like -24, you either fight the cold or find a place that still feels like the city. Sherry and Chris’s NAC engagement session in Ottawa started with a different plan. We were originally going to spend time around the ByWard Market, but once the temperature dropped, the National Arts Centre made so much more sense. 

It gave us warmth, space to move around, and still kept that downtown Ottawa feeling they wanted, with snow outside the windows, the Fairmont Château Laurier in the distance, and warm architectural details inside. 

As an Ottawa engagement photographer, I’ve photographed couples throughout the city in every kind of weather, so I’m always looking for locations that feel beautiful, comfortable, and true to the couple. For Sherry and Chris, the NAC checked every box. Ottawa is where they first met, so even though we moved their session indoors, it still felt connected to the city where their story began.

Indoor Engagement Session at the National Arts Centre

The National Arts Centre is such a great indoor engagement session location in Ottawa, especially in the winter when the weather can be unpredictable. The glass railings, honey-toned wood stairs, tall windows, geometric ceiling panels, and soft golden lights gave the whole session a polished but romantic feeling. It was the kind of indoor location that does not feel like a backup plan at all.

For Sherry and Chris, it made so much sense.

They wanted their engagement photos to feel downtown and iconic to Ottawa, and the NAC gave us exactly that. From inside, you still get that connection to the city through the windows and surrounding views, but with the comfort of being indoors on a freezing winter day.

Sherry wore a stunning long black dress that moved beautifully as she walked through the space, and Chris wore his military attire, which made the whole session feel even more meaningful and classic.

A Love Story That Started in Ottawa

Sherry and Chris first met in Ottawa through Tinder in late 2016. Not long after, Chris left for basic training in 2017, and by 2018, they had moved to British Columbia together. Even though life took them out west, Ottawa remained a special place for both of them. Sherry’s family is in Ottawa, Chris’s family is in London, and the city became a meaningful meeting point for them.

There was also something really full-circle about photographing them downtown.

When Sherry first came to Canada and arrived in Ottawa in 2016, she remembered being amazed by the architecture. She even thought to herself that she wanted to get married there one day. So having their engagement session surrounded by downtown Ottawa architecture, with the Château Laurier visible through the windows and the city just outside, felt quietly special.

That kind of connection is what made this session feel so special. It wasn’t just about choosing an indoor location because it was cold outside. It was about choosing a place that still felt like Ottawa, still felt meaningful, and still reflected the beginning of their story.

Effortless and Elegant Indoor Engagement Photos Overlooking Ottawa

This was also my first time meeting Sherry and Chris in person.

They had reached out to me in October 2024 for their January 2025 wedding, and because they were flying in from Vancouver, we planned their engagement session, rehearsal, and wedding all within the same week.

Even with such a busy few days ahead of them, they were so effortless to photograph.

Some couples need a little time to settle in front of the camera, but Sherry and Chris had such a natural ease together. They laughed easily, held onto each other comfortably, and moved through the space with so much trust. My approach during engagement sessions is to offer enough direction that couples never feel unsure of what to do, while still giving them space to move, laugh, and interact naturally. Sherry and Chris settled into that rhythm so easily.

Chris was such a gentleman throughout the entire session. He helped Sherry move around so she wouldn’t trip on her dress, held her hand on the stairs, and was always aware of her. It was one of those quiet things that says so much about a couple without needing to be explained.

You could tell they were excited, but also very settled with each other. That combination made their photos feel romantic without feeling overly posed.

Why the NAC Is Perfect for an Indoor Engagement Session

One of the best things about this session was that it still felt like a true downtown Ottawa engagement session, even though we stayed indoors.

That is what made the NAC such a good choice. The city was still part of the story. You could see the snow outside, the winter light, and the iconic architecture beyond the windows. The session had all the feeling of being downtown, but with the comfort and ease of an indoor space.

For couples planning an engagement session in Ottawa during the winter, the National Arts Centre is such a strong option. It gives you warmth, beautiful natural light, architectural variety, and a very Ottawa backdrop without needing to depend entirely on the weather.

And for Sherry and Chris, it was perfect.

Their session felt elegant, meaningful, and completely true to them. It brought together the city where they met, the architecture Sherry had once admired when she first arrived in Ottawa, Chris’s military attire, and the quiet, steady kind of love they share.

It was a beautiful start to their wedding week, and such a special way to document this chapter before their January wedding.
